Danang, Vietnam, Dec 2 — English amateur golfer John Ambridge played scintillating golf to win the Asia Pacific Senior Amateur Championship at Montgomerie Links, Vietnam in late November.
Playing in the 55 to 59 age bracket, Ambridge shot one under par 215 over three rounds to win by four shots from Australian Peter King (60-64), with another Aussie, Denis Dale (65-69) and New Zealander Frank Borren (55-59) each a further two shots back.
The net stroke winner Willie Ong Hoo Eng of Singapore finished with 209 to win by two strokes from Peter McGregor of Australia. Second placegetter Peter King shot the lowest score of the tournament, three under par 69, in the third round.
New Zealand won the team competition, comprising six players each, by three strokes from Australia with Hong Kong third.
The annual event, which previously has been played at many of Asia’s elite courses, attracted 98 players from 15 countries. It was the first time the tournament has been played in Vietnam.
Montgomerie Links, designed by Colin Montgomerie and opened in 2008, was named in October as Vietnam’s best championship golf course. Situated midway between Danang, Vietnam’s fourth largest city, and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed ancient trading port of Hoi An, the course has won numerous awards, including being named by Forbes Travel Guide in 2012 as one of Asia’s 10 best golf courses.
The 7090-yard par-72 layout is set in a natural sand dune environment near famous My Khe beach. Developed and owned by IndoChina Capital, one of Vietnam’s leading real estate and financial services companies, Montgomerie Links is one of three courses in the Danang-Hoi An-Hue region that are members of Golf Coast Vietnam, a co-operative program promoting golf tourism in the Central Coast region.
