Bangkok, Feb 19 — Red Mountain, the newest of eight golf courses on the island of Phuket, has turned the table on several more high profile layouts by being named best course in Thailand in the latest Planet Golf rankings.
Opened in 2007 and designed by Jon Morrow and Al Tikkanen, Red Mountain has trumped the hosts of Asian Tour professional events Black Mountain, Thai Country Club and Amata Spring in achieving the honour.
Amata Spring, a private course near Chonburi, and Black Mountain, named best course in Thailand for three years running at the Asia Pacific Golf Summit, were listed as the second and this best courses in the kingdom. Thai Country Club was listed sixth.
Planet Golf is an arm of US Golf Digest and its affiliated magazines around the world. Every two years it ranks the best courses in more than 180 countries worldwide.
Red Mountain, owned and operated by MBK Public Company Limited, which also owns the adjacent Loch Palm course and Riverdale Golf Club in Bangkok, occupies a former tin mine and features a dramatic landscape peppered by red cliffs and outcrops.
Natural waste bunkers, towering precipices, deep ravines and flooded gullies make for an exciting golf experience.
The par-72 layout plays slightly less than 7000 yards from the pro tees and a much more comfortable distance from forward tees.
Planet Golf rankings:
1. Red Mountain
2. Amata Spring
3. Black Mountain
4. Banyan
5. Siam Country Club Old Course
